Even now i remember that Saturday morning: the sun shining, i overslept again, it’s summer and this seems to be a really great day. Of course that as soon as I get of my bed, my fish notice the shadows and start waving to me. Its like their saying: Hey guys look, he overslept again and forgot to feed us last night, the bastard. Wave, wave and smile, maybe he remembers and feeds us.
I hope your getting a general idea as how a big fish fan I am, this happening about 10 years ago, i was 12.
Now I’m the kind of guy that likes taking hes time. I mean, come one, their fish, you can’t exactly play with fish like you do with your dog or cat or whatever! Their soul purpose is to look nice and mesmerize you in staring at their world for hours.
So i started feeding them, little drops of FIX, watching them battle for the small amount of food. Getting interesting now huh?
Now the strangest thing happened. I noticed that they were all eating, or at least trying to, except a small red little Guppy. He was feeling really bad, anyone could of noticed that. I started looking closer and guess what. . . he started getting small white dots all over his body. That’s sad, every fish-keeper knows this is usually a no-return disease and the only thing you can do is protect the other fish (this being a contagious disease).
Now this is when it hit me guys, I knew I had to spear his misery and euthanize him. The
question was how? I had feelings for him, I really love my fish and the way they make me feel happy when I’m sad. Of course the answer just popped-up in my mind, FLUSH HIM DOWN THE TOILET. And so I did guys, I flushed him down. I was really sad, I even shed a tear. Talking about it with the guy at the fish-shop made me realize what a mistake I made. This is one of the most cruel things you can do to an ill fish.
Never flush an ill fish down the toilet
This is in no way an effective method of euthanasia, its pure torture. The fish ends up in a septic tank or similar place where hes swimming in nasty chemicals and sewage before finally dying hours if not even days later from the chemicals.
Several other options exist for euthanizing your ill little fish, making it painless and fast.
My most favorite one is making him fall asleep and never wake up. This is really easy and it involves alcohol. Just mix 4 parts water and 1 part Vodka or any other grain neutral alcohol and place the ill fish inside.
Second best method is decapitation. If done the right way this method will involve instant sleep for your fish and no more suffering. Use a sharp knife and sever the spinal cord by quickly cutting down through the body just behind the eye at the level of the lateral line.
Some other methods include chemicals that I really don’t want to talk about. If you care enough for your ill fish make his suffering go away and use a simple method.
Remember: Never flush a fish down the toilet!

Another humane way to do it (i think) is to put them in a container filled with water and stick them in the freezer. I got this tip from our local fish store. Once they hit the “deep freeze” then bury them in the back yard…..say a little something nice….put up a grave stone and call it a day.

Hey Zoe I don’t think taking him to the fish store would do you or him any good. They usually don’t really care about your fish and flush them down the toilet.
What I would advise you to do is wait until he dies and place him in an paper envelope. You need to decide the means of getting rid of the envelope.
